Texture inclusive Hairdressing

For every hair everwhere

Our mission is simple: reform national training to reflect Australia’s true diversity and unlock hairdressing as a tool for equity, wellbeing, and connection.

Every Hair was founded to address a simple truth: Australia’s hairdressing training system is not yet inclusive of textured hair and the communities that carry this expertise.

We are a collective of educators, hair professionals and advocates calling for reform to embed texture-inclusive training and cultural safety into the national qualifications framework.

Our work is guided by community knowledge and lived experience. We recognise that for many, especially people with textured hair, hair care is more than a service—it’s an expression of identity, belonging, and wellbeing.

Our Vision

  • A hair industry where every person can walk into any salon and feel seen, safe and understood.

  • A workforce that represents the communities it serves.

  • A qualification system that values cultural knowledge and textured hair care as core professional skills - not as electives.

Research & Storytelling

We highlight the psychosocial importance of hair care – as an act of identity, wellbeing, and belonging – and share stories that shift the narrative from “style” to “care.”

We want to hear from you!

Share your story and help build a better, fairer hairdressing industry in Australia for Every Hair type.

We’re working on a project that looks at the experiences of people with African, curly, coily, and textured hair when visiting hairdressers in Australia. We’d love to hear your stories! If you could share one positive and one negative experience (or just one if you prefer), that would be amazing.

Feel free to include your first name and your age range (like “teenager,” “in my 20s,” etc.). This helps us understand the context better.

Our goal is to improve hairdressing training so that all hairdressers can confidently care for every hair type. This way, everyone feels welcome and well looked after.

Your experiences are super valuable, so please share with us!

Why It Matters

Australia’s training framework still leaves textured hair out of the curriculum. This exclusion limits both stylists and clients.

By embedding texture-inclusive education and cultural safety, we create a more connected, confident and equitable industry – where every person can feel respected, represented, and cared for.

❊ FAQs

Still wondering?

  • It means teaching hairdressers how to care for all types of hair – straight, wavy, curly, coily, and afro-textured. Every Hair makes sure no hair type is left out of training, so everyone can get safe, skilled, and confident care.

  • Hair is personal. For many people, it connects to culture, identity, and confidence. When stylists aren’t trained in textured hair, clients can feel excluded or misunderstood. Inclusive education makes hairdressing welcoming and safe for everyone.

  • Different textures need different techniques and products to stay healthy and look their best. Without proper knowledge, hair can be damaged, uncomfortable, or difficult to manage. Training ensures stylists can provide professional care for everyone.
